Catholic Schools Week: P3 learn about Brother Kevin Crowley

29th Jan 2023

This week St Mary’s celebrated Catholic Schools Week 2023. This year’s theme for Catholic Schools Week 2023 is ‘Walking Together in Faith & Love’

The theme is dedicated to celebrating the gift of Catholic education and recognizing the love and generosity of the entire school community: student, staff and home.

This week the children in Primary 3 have been learning about Brother Kevin Crowley, who was a kind and charitable man who gave his life to homeless people.Brother Kevin Crowley has been described as a “living saint”.

Brother Kevin Crowley has recently retired from his role at the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin after over fifty years of service.

The centre has provided meals and food parcels to tens of thousands of people since it was set up in 1969.

Brother Kevin, 87, has been a shining light for the homeless and people in need since then. He decided to set up the centre after he saw men eating food out of bins in the city.

More than 900 meals are provided every day and 1,500 food parcels are handed out to people in need every Wednesday.

President Higgins said Brother Kevin has led an "invaluable service providing essential food and compassion to those most in need".

On his trip to Dublin in 2018, Pope Francis visited the Centre and paid tribute to Brother Kevin for his charitable work.

The P3 children enjoyed watching the video about Brother Kevin’s charitable work and worked in pairs to write about Brother Kevin.
