Autumn Garden Tidy-Up

24th Oct 2024

Our Eco Council have been very busy in our Sensory Garden, which has become a little unruly since the Summer!

Autumn is that time of year when we get stuck into garden maintenance and give the shrubs and plants some due care so that they are all set for winter conditions before spring comes back around.

We would like to thank Sheila (one of our grandparents) and Maria (one of our parents) who came along to St Mary’s to assist our Eco Club with their Autumn tidy - up in our Sensory Garden!

Sheila and Maria took time to talk to our Eco Council about the importance of weeding before the frosty weather settles in. Getting rid of the weeds now will stop them becoming a bigger problem in spring.

Our Eco Club weren’t long tackling the weeding with their gardening gloves and  ensuring the weeds were pulled right out from the roots.

To prevent disease spreading in our plants and to keep the appearance of our garden up, Sheila and Maria showed the children how to snip away dying leaves or flower heads that have finished blooming and how to prune shrubs too to promote healthier growth next year.

Sheila and Maria told the children that the best time to prune our lavender is in Autumn, before the  frost sets in.

The children enjoyed harvesting some of our lavender and proudly presented little bouquets of lavender to the school staff. The floral scent of the lavender was gorgeous and everyone enjoyed the calming aroma throughout the school. Needless to say we all slept like babies after our Autumn Tidy - Up!

We look forward to continuing our gardening with Sheila and Maria and any other interested members of our school community in the weeks to come. The children are so excited to begin planting their bulbs and winter pansies in our garden.

Thank you Sheila and Maria for all your help! We had lots of fun and learned so much about garden maintenance.
