Our first genre of writing in Primary 6 was non-chronological reports. The children have been working hard on this genre. First they looked at the purpose, audience, structure and features of this type of text. After producing a plan and practising writing their subheadings, each child produced their own independent report on a ‘make-believe creature’. These were absolutely fabulous.
We took this learning into our ‘World Around Us’ and children worked in groups to research, display and present their findings on one of the seven continents of the world. These reports were a joy to see and listen to.
Finally, for a homework task, the children produced a fantastic report based on a volcano. They decided which subheadings they wanted to research and present information on and some of the children even provided a glossary for technical vocabulary. This linked in nicely with our theme ‘It’s A Disaster’ and our first natural disaster – volcanoes.
