Primary 6 - Shadows Investigation
Our Primary 6 pupils have really enjoyed taking their learning outdoors this week!
In our exciting World Around Us topic, we have been delving into the fascinating concepts of day and night and how shadows are formed. The children in Primary 6 have been actively engaged in understanding how the Earth's rotation and the position of the sun influence these phenomena.
Recently, we conducted a shadow investigation in the playground to observe how the position of the sun impacts our shadows. We made observations at three different times: 9:00 AM, 12:00 noon, and 2:00 PM.
At 9:00 AM, the sun was low in the sky, casting long shadows that stretched towards the west. By 12:00 noon, the sun was directly overhead, resulting in much shorter shadows that pointed directly beneath us. Finally, at 2:00 PM, the sun had moved further west, and our shadows were longer again, stretching towards the east.
This hands-on investigation helped the pupils understand the dynamic relationship between the sun's position and the size and direction of our shadows.
