Traditional Music in St Mary’s!
St Mary’s has a great reputation and tradition of music and thanks to our Parent Support Group who provided the school with a wide range of traditional musical instruments and with funding from the Extended Schools Programme, we have been enabled to provide traditional music lessons for our Key Stage 2 pupils.
We are fortunate to have Mrs Marina Mohan visit St Mary’s twice a week, to teach the children to play a variety of Irish traditional musical instruments including tin whistle, bodhrán, fiddle, flute, accordion and the mandolin.
Marina is passionate about giving children the opportunity to learn an instrument and gain an interest in traditional Irish music and culture.
As well as music tuition, Marina prepares the children for concerts and any other music events that may arise during the school year.
We are delighted to say that our pupils are going from strength to strength! They have learned to play a varied repertoire of tunes in a fun and collaborative environment.
They have improved their instrumental technique and have developed familiarity with Irish tune types, including jigs, reels, hornpipes, and more.
Please enjoy our Primary 6 pupils performing “Dawning of the Day”, a traditional Irish March.
Well done Ellie-Jane, Charlie, Maria, Leo, Mary -Ellen and Kassie!
